PRESENTATIONS DESCRIBED

Session One: 8:35-9:20 a.m.

Roughneck Review: How Bakersfield College Showcases Student Works Online
Brad Stiles, BC (Grapevine)
At BC, we have created an online journal of excellent student works. This journal, Roughneck Review, is a way for students to begin a publication record, have works to show to admission and scholarship committees, and provide evidence for job or transfer applications. Additionally, teachers can pull sample student works up on the projector in similar classes and launch discussion about how the featured students have done in the past.

The Common Core State Standards and Their Impact on Higher Education
Karen Patino, KHSD (California)
This session will provide a general overview of the state move to new standards, which will affect all courses in the high school curriculum. The session will also cover the new assessment, SmarterBalanced, that will replace the California Standardized Testing (CSTs).

Taking the Risk Out of Research
Dawn Dobie, BC and Nancy Guidry, BC (San Joaquin)
Many students panic when they receive their first research paper assignment in college. What research survival skills do students need to succeed? What do college professors require of their students in the research realm? At this session, we will share a video featuring BC professors who talk about what they expect of student research and explore how to best prepare students for the college research experience.

From Basic Writing to Academic Writing with the Text A Blueprint for Sentence Variety
Jacinto Gardea, PC (Mojave)
A Blueprint for Sentence Variety shows students why it’s not easy to identify verbs (because of the many words that look like verbs), the large number of pronouns that can be either subjects or objects, the words that can be either prepositions or subordinating conjunctions, why a word that is part of a prepositional phrase can never be a subject, the words that create dependent clauses, the words and punctuation marks we use to connect independent clauses, a technique that can help summarize without plagiarizing, and seven types of quotes and the techniques we use to introduce them.

Session Two: 10:20-11:05 a.m.

Poster Session

Three Ways to Foster Metacognitive Engagement with Discipline-Specific Texts
Mary Peterson and Andy McCutcheon, COC (Ballroom)
Ample research studies validate that students who consciously monitor and assess their reading process learn, retain, and transfer knowledge more effectively than those who don’t. Metacognition is also linked to higher levels of motivation and personal engagement in learning. As instructors, we can create opportunities for students to metacognitively engage with course texts so that they more effectively develop discipline-specific skills and build course knowledge.

Reusable Resources: GCs and IMALS
Jessica Grimes and Kamala Carlson TC (Ballroom)
This session will illustrate how our pocket textbooks that are content rich yet concise benefit students across the curriculum by augmenting basic skills.

Best Practices in Composition
Danielle Harris and Tanna Rozar, TC (Ballroom)
We will be presenting two different essay topics, including all of the scaffolding from brainstorming assignments to peer review practices with rough drafts. Each step meets a Student Learning Outcome, making each assignment a Best Practice.

MLA Out of the Way: Print and Video Tutorials for Students
Gary Enns, CC (Ballroom)
In the past, I found myself having to teach and reteach MLA Style formatting and documentation which can be great challenges for students who do not have much experience in formatting. In order to spend less time on MLA and allow myself more time to comment on the content of my students’ work, I created several handouts and YouTube tutorials using simple screen capturing, a snipping tool, and an MLA handbook. The result? I now spend less time on MLA and more time on what truly matters—my students’ ideas.

Some Assembly Required: Helping Students Think their way Through Works Cited Pages
Tammy Lynde, BC, PC, and CSUB (Ballroom)
This is a “poster session” that is meant to present ideas and strategies for helping students think their way through creating Works Cited pages for their papers instead of simply depending on electronic sources to create the entries for them. In an age of overdependence on technology, it is often helpful to get students to do this sort of work so that they can function even in absence of technology and use reference material when needed. The presentation is also intended to start a conversation with the participants about best practices for teaching works cited.

Panel Discussion

College Readiness
Pamela Boyles, BC; Kamala Carlson ,TC; Kim Flachmann, CSUB; Susan Regier, PC; Rich Matzen, Woodbury
(Grapevine)
This session will present Student Learning Outcomes and graded papers from all levels of writing courses at the colleges in our community. Discussion will follow the presentation.

Session Three: 1:00-1:45 p.m.

Writing Express: Two Composition Classes in One Semester
Paula Parks, Jeannie Parent, and Rebecca Monks, BC (Grapevine)
Compressed and stacked classes have shown increased success and retention across the country. At Bakersfield College, we have three variations in language arts: ESL, two developmental classes, and a developmental class and a college level class. Representatives of all three will share why it works and pitfalls to avoid.

Assistive Technology and the English Classroom
Joseph Polizzotto, TC (California)
The field of assistive technology has many useful applications to English and ESL classrooms. With knowledge of some free, easy-to-use apps out there, faculty can make learning a lot easier for their students.

The Fellowship of MyWritingLabPlus at CSU, Bakersfield
Brooke Hughes, Randi Brummett, Victor Gonzales, CSUB (San Joaquin)
For the past several years, composition and many non-English courses at CSUB have used MyWritingLabPlus to supplement grammar instruction. Come hear about the ways in which the program is used and learn about the MyWritingLabPlus Headquarters.

A Continuing Discussion: Transitions Between High School and College
(Mojave)
This open discussion session will focus on ways to help students transition from high school to college.
